A Hartselle man accused of fatally shooting another man inside his home on New Year’s Day was granted a $300,000 bond Thursday after both the defense and prosecution told a judge the defendant suffers from alcoholism, which they said played a role in the incident.
Roger Timothy Clayton, 67, was charged with murder and booked into the Morgan County Jail on Jan. 1 without bond ahead of an Aniah’s Law hearing, which allows judges to deny pretrial release from jail when charged with certain violent crimes.
Clayton appeared in court in shackles with his attorney, Howard Belser of Decatur. Morgan County Assistant District Attorney Courtney Schellack represented the state. Neither side presented testimony from witnesses or investigators, and Schellack noted Clayton has no prior felony convictions…
