Pinpoint Weather: Cold and windy Sunday

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) —  Rain comes to an end tonight as a cold front passes through the region. A drier and colder airmass will arrive for our Sunday alongside windy conditions. A Wind Advisory will be in effect along and west of the Blue Ridge from 6 AM until midnight. Frequent gusts around 25-35 mph are expected with gusts up to 50 mph possible.

Afternoon temperatures will be colder in the 30s to lower 40s under increasing sunshine. Temperatures will drop quickly by the evening into the 30s, then into the 20s areawide overnight. With strong winds, wind chill values will be lower as well.

With colder air arriving, upslope snow showers will be possible over the mountains during the day.

Accumulations will be confined to the western hills where a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for a portion of the Greenbrier Valley for snowfall totals around 2-4 inches. Snow flurries could possibly reach as far east as the crest of the Blue Ridge, but accumulation is not expected.

With high pressure overhead to begin the new work week, dry and mostly sunny conditions are expected. Temperatures will begin near seasonal norms before warming up into the 50s by mid-week.

The next weather system will arrive Wednesday with a cold front that will bring a chance for rain showers and mountain snow. There remains uncertainty on the evolution and strength of the system where a wintry mix may be possible for more than just the mountains. We’ll be keeping a close eye on it…
