Fort Fisher to observe anniversary of capture during Civil War

Fort Fisher State Historic Site is commemorating Saturday, Jan. 17, the 161st anniversary of when the fort was captured at the end of the American Civil War.

The fort protected the port of Wilmington until it fell to U.S. forces in January 1865.

Activities are to take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. There are living history displays, artifact highlights and family activities planned as well as artillery demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission to the event is free…
