Detroit-area man pleads guilty to committing $500K in unemployment insurance fraud

DETROIT, MI – A Detroit-area man pleaded guilty earlier this week to defrauding unemployment insurance of more than $500,000.

Nicholas Overton, 32, admitted to submitting roughly 90 fraudulent unemployment insurance claims across 20 states and territories, netting roughly $544,540, according to court records. He pleaded guilty Jan. 7 to one count each of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft before Michigan Eastern District Court Judge Denise Page Hood.

Overton, of Novi, filed the claims using the personal information of more than 10 people who were not aware their identity had been stolen, according to court records…
