Albuquerque Fire Rescue seeing improvement in staffing and fleet numbers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Fire Rescue saw 35 cadets graduate on Friday, but that’s just one part of the department’s recent staffing efforts. Since 2017, AFR has been working to improve its staffing, fleet management, and funding efforts. As of 2025, they’ve added 90 sworn members to their team, for a total of 760 firefighters across Albuquerque. Many were part of the 15 cadet classes that AFR has run over the past several years, with hundreds graduating.

They’ve also improved their fleet numbers, purchasing 14 new engines and dozens of other vehicles, which wouldn’t be possible without significant budget increases, with more than $56 million added to their funding since 2017.
