Mesa school district faces nearly a 25% enrollment drop by 2035

Mesa Public Schools, the state’s largest district, anticipates losing 23.28% of its student population in the next decade, which in turn would affect its funding.

Enrollment for the current school year was 51,093 and was expected to dip to 39,196 by 2035-36, according to the district.

“There’s a lot of variables that are playing into this,” explained Kristi Glassmeyer, district senior research analyst at last week’s Governing Board study session.

“There’s economic factors, there’s household factors like what buildings are being built – whether they’re multifamily, whether they’re single family, whether they’re rented, whether they’re owned – and what cohorts, what census-age cohorts, are becoming more predominant within our community.”…
