Richmond Education Association and Richmond Public Schools host events to highlight public school underfunding

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Education Association (REA) and Richmond Public Schools (RPS) will host events to raise awareness for the underfunding of public schools in Virginia.

In a Jan. 10 press release from REA, they said that they have partnered with RPS to host multiple events over the next few weeks to advocate for more funding in public education during the upcoming General Assembly session.

The events are listed below:

Light Brigade to fund schools

On Sunday, Jan. 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., members will hold lighted signs that say ‘Fund Our Schools.’ These signs will be held on the Bellevue overpass above Interstate 95 as legislators travel back to Richmond.

State Advocacy 101: Get involved during the General Assembly sessions

On Monday, Jan. 12, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at G.H. Reif Elementary School, and Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Dogwood Middle School, REA and RPS will host two training meetings. These meetings will focus on what RPS needs and how to participate during the General Assembly session.

Community screenprinting in support of education justice

On Friday, Jan. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Studio Two Three on 109 W. 15th St., members will screen-print posters that will be displayed across Richmond. These posters will raise awareness for an increase in funding for public schools…
