Unsafe ice conditions prompt warnings in western Massachusetts

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Temperatures are warming up in western Massachusetts, causing ice to melt on local ponds and lakes, including Piper Pond in West Springfield, where ice skating is currently prohibited.

The recent warm weather follows a cold winter that resulted in ice formation on area lakes and ponds. As temperatures rise and rain is expected, the melting ice poses safety risks for outdoor activities. Trevor Wood, the Director of the West Springfield Department of Public Works, advised on the safety of ice conditions.

“With the warm-up, the ground warms up around the ice, so the sides of the ice aren’t as thick as the middle of the ice, so I would probably stay off the ice until we get a good freeze again,” Wood said…
