AUSTIN – A protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Austin escalated into a tense confrontation with law enforcement, resulting in multiple detainments and the use of pepper balls.
The demonstration began around 6:30 p.m. when a small group encouraged bystanders to join them in the streets in front of the JJ Pickle Federal Building, a site recently used by ICE. The protesters blocked traffic, prompting Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers to confront them.
David Whitfield, a participant, expressed support for the protest, saying, “It’s good. I’m glad that we’re taking to the streets. I think it’s the type of action we need right now. I think the turnout can be even bigger.”…
