LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Jim Hartung, who led the U.S. National Gymnastics Team to their only Gold Medal in the 1984 Olympics and was a mainstay on the Nebraska gymnastics team’s coaching staff, has passed away at the age of 65.
As an athlete, Hartung led the Huskers gymnastic team to their first four NCAA team titles, was Nebraska’s first Nissen-Emery Award winner in 1982, and was a two-time member of the U.S.’s Olympic Team, leading them to the aforementioned gold in 1984.
Hartung, who also went to Omaha South High School, is also an inaugural member of the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015, and the first College Gymnastics Association Hall of Fame Class in 2024.
