Gradual warming trend starts today for New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Happy Sunday morning! We are starting this week on a frigid note, once again, throughout the state. Temperatures have fallen in the lower double digits in western New Mexico and likely below zero in higher elevations. A Cold Weather Advisory is in place, from the National Weather Service, for parts of Grant, Luna, and Hidalgo counties. This advisory is for wind chills that could fall between 15 and 7 degrees. Also, temperatures have fallen to -12, so far, at Angel Fire, which could make it the coldest location in the contiguous United States. On Saturday, Angel Fire Airport was, in fact, the coldest place in the contiguous United States according to preliminary data.

Sunshine is ahead for Sunday with high clouds throughout the state. A warming trend starts today for New Mexico. Near-seasonable-to-seasonable high temperatures will be on tap with calm winds across the state for most. Breezier conditions may persist in southwest New Mexico where gusts could surpass 30 mph. Breezy winds are expected to return later this week in addition to back door cold fronts that will enter eastern New Mexico on Wednesday and Friday.

This stretch of dry weather will extend through the weekend and into the second full week of January. As we head into the middle of the week, high temperatures will climb back into the mid 50s in Albuquerque, making for milder temperatures. Temperatures could be roughly 10 degrees above normal on Tuesday and Wednesday in parts of New Mexico. Throughout this week, enough moisture is expected to produce high-level clouds to accompany the sunshine we will see. There is a slight chance of rain in the northern mountains later this week and a slight rain in the southeast corner of New Mexico on Tuesday. Overall, we are trending warmer and drier. Have a great week!…
