Alabama lawmakers prepare for upcoming 2026 legislative session

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The new legislative session is approaching, and lawmakers are preparing for what could be a fast-paced and strategic few months in Montgomery.

“I think you’ll see some public safety legislation, some bills regarding education and economic development,” said former state representative Paul DeMarco. “But really, I know lawmakers want to get in, get everything that needs to be done and then adjourn for the session so they can go back and campaign for votes before the May party primaries.”

Because this is an election year, political experts say the calendar, not just policy, will play a major role in how much gets done.
