A deli icon calls it a career, as Herman’s Boy enters a new era

Herman’s Boy, a Rockford institution known for its coffee, baked goods and Mackinac-style fudge, will stay in the family as the third generation takes over the nearly 50-year-old business.

In a deal that closed on New Year’s Eve, brothers Jeff and Doug Havemeier sold the store they’ve owned for the last 14 years to a new ownership group of two married couples: Doug Havemeier’s stepson Zach Pawloski and his wife Emily Pawloski, and her sister, Ali Burns and husband Jamie Burns.

Herman’s Boy roasts coffee and sells a variety of sandwiches and bagels from a 7,000-square-foot shop in a farmhouse at 220 Northland Dr. NE in Rockford. The company was started by Floyd and Sharon Havemeier in 1979 as The Melting Pot, selling Minnesota cheeses, nuts and locally-made crafts…
