How a police officer helped a woman sleeping in a Syracuse cemetery find a home

Syracuse, N.Y. — For months, Rhea Holmes slept on her husband’s grave at Oakwood Cemetery after being evicted from her Syracuse home.

From May to mid-December, she quietly lived at the cemetery, sleeping under a tarp atop his grave. She would sneak in in the evenings. She sometimes used bathrooms at nearby Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry to clean up.

Holmes said she didn’t tell people she was homeless…
