Here are Appleton-area grocery prices at the start of the new year

Every month, the Appleton Post-Crescent will check the prices at three Appleton-area grocery stores, Walmart, Piggly Wiggly and Pick ‘n Save, to keep track of the general cost of groceries in the area.

On Jan. 6, we checked online prices at Walmart at 3701 E. Calumet St. and Pick ‘n Save at 511 W. Calumet St. in Appleton. We also checked Piggly Wiggly at 1151 Midway Road in Menasha, comparing the total cost of name-brand items and store-brand alternatives.

Our full grocery list includes:

  • half a gallon of almond milk
  • a loaf of whole-wheat bread
  • one pound of bacon
  • one pound of bananas
  • one pound of 80/20 ground beef
  • a four-pack of butter
  • standard box of Cheerios
  • standard box of Cheez-Its
  • a dozen eggs
  • a five-pound bag of flour
  • canned green beans
  • 18 ounces of strawberry jam
  • 16 ounces of peanut butter
  • a head of iceberg lettuce
  • a gallon of milk
  • individual navel oranges
  • a two-pack of paper towels
  • a six-pack of toilet paper

Piggly Wiggly and Pick ‘n Save see increases on name brand totals

While overall prices for all three stores didn’t fluctuate much, Walmart was again the cheapest of the three stores and saw the biggest price decrease from December in its name brand total…
