Protests have erupted across the country, including in Nebraska, following the shooting death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman, by an ICE agent on Jan. 7. Authorities reported that Good was shot after allegedly hitting an ICE officer and failing to follow lawful commands. In Kearney, dozens of protestors gathered on Sunday, wearing black clothes with “ICE OUT” written in masking tape and carrying handmade signs demanding accountability. “We just want to honor the people whose lives have been lost, such as Renee Good, who was killed over in Minneapolis, and to mourn their lives,” said Natalie Blight, a Kearney protestor.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has repeatedly claimed Good was a domestic terrorist, and stated in a social media post that, “ICE isn’t the problem, the problem is sanctuary politicians and the violent criminal illegal aliens they protect.” Despite the less severe scope of ICE activities in Nebraska compared to blue states, Blight expressed concerns about the future. “We know that the ICE detention center is over in McCook, so it’s just a hop, skip and a jump away from happening here,” she said. “Even if it’s not as rampant as it is in blue states, I feel as if that it is not far away from happening.”…
