Open records experts challenge sheriff’s second FOIL denial in Granville crash case

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — News 4 Investigates has learned that the Erie County Sheriff’s Office incorrectly cited an exemption in the Freedom of Information Law to deny releasing the bulk of its internal investigation into narcotics chief Daniel “D.J.” Granville, who crashed a county-owned truck nearly two years ago.

The latest denial has drawn skepticism from two open-records experts, and continues a pattern of resistance to FOIL requests, despite Sheriff John Garcia’s pledge in May to improve transparency and hire additional FOIL officers.
