New USPS mail guidelines may affect SC voter registration postmark dates

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is warning voters that recent changes in U.S. Postal Service mail processing guidelines could affect the postmark dates on mailed voter registration materials.

Under clarified USPS operational guidelines, some mail may not receive a postmark on the same day the Postal Service first takes possession of it. Because South Carolina voter registration deadlines are based on the postmark date, the change could impact voters who mail registration forms close to a deadline.

State law requires voter registration applications submitted by mail to be postmarked at least 30 days before an election. If that deadline falls on a Sunday or a USPS holiday, the postmark deadline is extended to the next business day…
