Union County homeowners win right to opt out of unwanted amenities fee

MINERAL SPRINGS, N.C. — A management company’s longstanding practice of charging Union County homeowners for a pool, tennis courts and clubhouse they don’t use and their homeowners association doesn’t own will soon end, potentially saving homeowners hundreds of dollars a year.

In recent weeks, Braesael Management Company sent out more than 200 letters to members of the Stonebridge Homeowners Association, addressing the future of its controversial amenities fee, which is in in addition to the neighborhood’s traditional HOA dues. As WCNC Charlotte exposed in October, the company “mistakenly” used the HOA’s rules to try and justify the facility use charges. In some cases, Braesael even threatened debt collection.

“We apologize for any confusion and want to provide a simple path forward,” the letter reads.

The company, acting on behalf of True Homes (the owner of the amenities), is now giving homeowners impacted two options: continue paying a $39 monthly fee to use the facilities a mile up the road or opt out altogether…
