Lawsuit against Tullahoma City Schools set to go to trial Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – On Tuesday, a federal jury in Knoxville is set to hear a First Amendment case involving a Tennessee high school student who said he was punished for social media posts made off-campus.

In Summer 2022, a 17-year-old student at Tullahoma High School sued the school system for violating his constitutional rights when he was suspended for three days over memes he created and shared on Instagram, which poked fun at the school’s principal.

The suit was filed by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a nonprofit organization built to defend and sustain individual rights to free speech in the US, on behalf of the student, who was a minor when the incident occurred…
