A large lizard initially reported as a Komodo dragon was rescued from an Alameda home after police and animal control responded to a call about a dangerous reptile left behind by former tenants, authorities said.
The animal was later identified as a young Ornate Nile Monitor, a species that can grow up to 7 feet long and is known for its powerful bite, sharp claws and muscular tail.
“For these reasons, Ornate Nile Monitors are not suitable for beginner reptile keepers and are never appropriate pets for children,” the Alameda Police Department said in a statement.
