From the Darkroom shows 1951’s new Princess Crackers building

In early January 1951, a new chapter opened for the Princess Crackers brand with the completion of its Springfield facility on South Glenstone Avenue.

The building stood as one of the most recent additions to the growing commercial district along Glenstone and reflected the expanding presence of the Union Biscuit Company, which had distributed Princess crackers in the region for more than 25 years. The structure was built along the same lines as other Union Biscuit branches across seven states and was designed to house district offices, warehouse space, and garages for the company’s Springfield-area representatives.

Branch officials, led by cashier Ralph Richardson, moved into the new 80- by 100-foot red-brick building at 775 S. Glenstone Ave. roughly two weeks before this photograph appeared in the Leader & Press on Jan. 11, 1951. The company relocated from its earlier quarters at 628 N. Nettleton Ave…
