Convicted killer dies while on hospice care at Oregon State Penitentiary

SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — The Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) is reporting that 76-year-old James Bryon Coon died the morning of January 11, 2026, while on hospice care at the Oregon State Penitentiary.

“Coon entered DOC custody on October 26, 2001, from Deschutes County with an earliest release date of August 11, 2029,” Department of Corrections said in press release.

According to the Bend Bulletin, Coon was sentenced to 30 years for killing his girlfriend, Patty Darlene Flynn in 2001. “An autopsy revealed she had died of probable asphyxiation,” the paper stated…
