UH Athletics could be getting $4.1 million in NIL funding

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A request of $5 million for institutional name, image, and likeness funding from the Hawaii State Legislature to help attract and retain student athletes at the University of Hawaii could be close to happening.

Gov. Josh Green is asking the legislature to fund $4.1 million of that request for the upcoming 2026 legislative session.

“What I’m recommending is $4.1 million, and they raised another million dollars already,” Gov. Green told Wake Up 2Day Monday.

The funding comes amid wild changes in the NCAA landscape, which now allows universities to pay student-athletes a maximum of $20.5 million annually in institutional NIL, with outside NIL having to be ok’d through a clearinghouse to determine legitimacy…
