‘He’s a hero’: Community honors fallen DC police officer during vigil at Ballou High School

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A community came together Tuesday night to honor the life and legacy of Metropolitan Police Department police officer Terry Bennett, remembering him as a hero, mentor and pillar of support both on and off the field.

More than 100 people gathered on the football field at Ballou High School, where Bennett served as an assistant football coach, for a candlelight vigil just days after his death. The Ballou High School marching band played during the ceremony, adding an emotional tribute for the 32-year-old officer whose impact stretched far beyond his badge.

“We love Terry,” Deidre Boyd of New Image Community Baptist Church said.
