BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Dry and windy conditions make it a dangerous time to burn outdoors in South Carolina.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission lifted a red flag alert early Monday morning, but first responders continue to urge everyone to use extra caution. The alert itself encouraged residents to postpone any outdoor burning, but did not prohibit it. Despite no current warnings or bans in place, fire departments across the Lowcountry remain on high alert, with relative humidity at 30%.
“Something like a red flag alert, that’s just like a strong warning saying ‘Hey, the conditions are not good. We encourage you not to burn.’ It’s not a ban, it’s them saying ‘Don’t make us say we told you so.’” Colt Roy, assistant fire chief for Central Berkeley Fire and EMS, said. “What we want to do is remind people at this time of year, because that red flag has been lifted, the conditions still aren’t good.”…
