Proposed charter school in Wilmington would integrate deaf, hearing students

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A new charter school could soon open in Wilmington, focusing on blending students of all capabilities in the same classroom through a bimodal and bilingual approach.

Dr. Rebecca Darden Perry, who was born hard-of-hearing and became deaf as she aged, is leading the effort to create Darden-Perry Academy. The charter school would integrate deaf and hard-of-hearing students with children who can hear.
