Waccamaw Riverkeeper cites flood concerns amid Horry Co. landfill expansion proposal

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Complaints were made about the proposed landfill expansion during a council meeting last week, citing environmental concerns.

A public notice published on Dec. 19 shows that the project would encompass more than 400 acres in and around the Steritt Swamp and would fill in more than 100 acres of wetlands.

The proposal said the purpose of this expansion is to “provide solid waste management in Horry County that is practicable and consistent with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations and provide additional landfill capacity for 23.4 million tons of non-divertible waste expected over the next 45 years.”…
