Greene County deputies arrest man in armed hostage case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Greene County deputies arrested a man accused of holding someone hostage with a gun on Thursday, Jan. 8.

Clinton Haynes, 36, of Springfield, is charged with first-degree kidnapping, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest, according to online court records.

According to the probable cause statement, deputies were called to a reported hostage situation in Willard near State Highway 160 and Farm Road 115. The suspect, Haynes, had a warrant out for multiple domestic assault and gun charges.

Dispatch reported that Haynes was holding a female hostage with a gun and made threats to shoot the victim if law enforcement contacted them. He was also reported to be driving a black car into Springfield with the victim.

During the search, Springfield police officers located the suspect’s vehicle at 114 W. Kearney St. in Springfield. Deputies saw Haynes run away from officers and toward the victim. Deputies then said Haynes hugged the victim in a way that looked like he was using her “as a human shield” and refused to drop his pistol despite demands from law enforcement, according to the probable cause statement…
