Woman accused of fatally shooting foster family sent to competency examination

PITTSFIELD TWP., MI – One of three people accused of fatally shooting a foster family last year will undergo testing to determine if she can be held responsible.

Although testing has previously determined Shuvonne Vinson is able to follow court proceedings, she will undergo additional testing to assess whether she can be deemed responsible for the fatal shootings based on her mental or emotional state at the time, according to court records.

Vinson is one of three people facing multiple felonies, including charges of open murder, for an attack on a Northfield Township home resulting in the deaths of Jennifer Bernhard, 48, and her father Stevie Ray Smith, 74, on Jan. 1, 2025…
