‘Burst of snow’ could top 1 foot in parts of North Carolina mountains, NWS says

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the North Carolina mountains, with forecasters predicting “a burst of snow” could top 12 inches in some spots, according to a Jan. 14 National Weather Service news release.

The advisory was issued early Wednesday, not long after Charlotte’s slim chance of flurries vanished from the Thursday morning forecast.

Mountain counties are warned the worst of the weather will come between 3 p.m. Wednesday and noon Thursday, and the hardest hit areas will be higher elevations in Swain and Haywood counties…
