Decatur’s former ice complex to reopen as indoor event center

DECATUR, Ala. — Construction on Decatur’s former Point Mallard Ice Complex is entering its final phase, with the building on track to reopen in May 2026 as a new indoor event center. It will host weddings, trade shows, conferences, and other gatherings.

After closing in 2019 due to mechanical problems, rising repair costs, and long-term operating losses, city leaders approved a plan to convert the nearly 30,000-square-foot facility into a modern, temperature-controlled space for year-round events.

Plans for the renovated center include a large event floor, breakout rooms, and a lobby for conferences, nonprofit meetings, and city functions. The venue will join Decatur’s lineup of event spaces, including Ingalls Harbor…
