Weld County town votes to refund hefty fines for photo radar speeding tickets

KERSEY, Colo. — A small Weld County town has voted not to reinstate the hefty fines for photo radar speeding tickets and will refund all the citations that were issued.

On Tuesday night, Kersey’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted down an ordinance that would reinstate the $340 fines, but also voted to refund all the $340 tickets that were issued before Nov. 18. The citations were issued for drivers who were clocked going 25 mph or more over the posted speed limit on Weld County Road 49 near U.S. Highway 34.

This comes after the board voted to pause the $340 citations in mid-November after reporting from Steve On Your Side showed the more expensive fines violated the town’s own ordinance for speed cameras, which at the time capped fines at $40, following guidance from state statute…
