In rare statement, Cleveland police suggest they won’t assist ICE crackdowns

CLEVELAND, Ohio – In a rare statement Wednesday, Cleveland police said they would not assume responsibility for immigration enforcement. The remarks come in the aftermath of the killing of Renee Good at the hands of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis.

“CDP officers will never ask about an individual’s immigration status,” the statement said. “CDP is tasked with protecting public safety, and while they will take action against anyone who commits violent crimes, they are not responsible for enforcing general federal immigration law.”
