Hochul Unveils Plan For 2nd Ave Subway, Jamaica Station

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a major transit expansion plan, focusing on the Second Avenue Subway and Jamaica Station. During her State of the State Address on Tuesday, Hochul proposed a $50 million investment to redesign Jamaica Station, aiming to enhance integration between the subway, Long Island Railroad, and AirTrain services for 200,000 daily riders. This redesign seeks to modernize the station, improve traffic flow, and reduce crowding, addressing the lack of investment over the past two decades.

Hochul also unveiled plans for the westward expansion of the Second Avenue Subway, extending the Q line along 125th Street with new stops at Lenox Avenue, St. Nicholas Avenue, and Broadway. This expansion will connect with seven other subway lines, benefiting 240,000 daily riders and saving significant time and costs. According to Governor Hochul, “New Yorkers deserve a world-class transit system.”

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has already begun preliminary engineering and design work for this project. The westward extension is expected to complete by 2032, following the ongoing extension of the Q line through East Harlem.
