Discovering the Historic Maine Colony on the Suncoast

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – They came by train from Maine in 1920, seeking warmer winters on doctor’s orders. Their houses arrived by barge up Phillippi Creek from the Sears and Roebuck catalogue.

Now, more than 100 years later, the Maine Colony neighborhood and its historic clubhouse are getting new life through music and community efforts.

The Phillippi Crest Club, also known as the Maine Colony, was developed in 1920 in what is now one of Sarasota’s oldest neighborhoods. Jeffrey Frank, co-president of the club, said the area looked much different a century ago…
