Syracuse man charged with manslaughter for July 2025 crash that killed pedestrian

SHERBURNE, N.Y. — A Syracuse man was arrested in connection with a fatal vehicle and pedestrian crash in the Southern Tier.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said it charged Zackery M. Kulas, 37, with manslaughter in the second degree, leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and tampering with physical evidence. The sheriff’s office announced the charges against Kulas on Tuesday.

The investigation into the fatal crash began on July 4, 2025, in the Town of Sherburne. Kulas is accused of striking Jeffrey Maxson, 59, of Sherburne, with his vehicle. Maxson was walking on State Highway 80 in the evening hours when the incident occurred…
