City to start collecting food waste in new ‘GROW’ pilot program

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The City’s Department of Environmental Services is starting a new pilot program this year and they need your help. O’ahu homes generate over 60,000 tons of food waste each year, which ends up going to H-Power or our landfill.

Food scraps can be used for composting. So the city has developed the Green Recycling Organic Waste program, or GROW, and are asking people to include the food in their green bins. This will help minimize the impact on the landfill and shift toward more sustainable outcomes.
