School closing prediction for Thursday, Jan. 15

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Lake-effect snow will target parts of the immediate lakeshore into Thursday, which could produce a closing or two.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Allegan, Muskegon, Oceana and Van Buren counties until 7 a.m. Thursday. Snow is expected to remain confined to the immediate lakeshore, and the latest trends are shifting the heavy snow threat further over Lake Michigan.

The county most likely to receive impactful snow overnight is Oceana, with less certainty for Van Buren, Allegan and Muskegon. As a result, the chance for closings is overall on the low side.

Northern area

Oceana County has the best chance of seeing accumulating snow Wednesday night. For now, certainty is only high enough for a low (2/5) chance for school closings, with a very low (1/5) in northern Muskegon. Elsewhere, little if any additional snowfall is anticipated by Thursday morning.

Southern area

Recent forecast trends have shifted the heavy snow threat into Berrien County, making the snow more likely to remain offshore of Allegan & Van Buren counties. There still is a chance, especially in South Haven and Covert, where a low (2/5) chance exists.

School closings will be possible in a wider area Friday as snow begins to intensify. Timing and amounts are yet to be fully determined, so stay tuned…
