On Your Side: Scammers use ‘ghost tapping’ to steal from contactless payment cards

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Scammers are exploiting the convenience of contactless payments through a growing threat called contactless payment fraud, or “ghost tapping.”

The wireless version of card skimming allows criminals to use wireless devices to steal money without ever touching victims’ cards. Scammers may target people in crowded public spaces, bumping into them while secretly getting close enough to tap-enabled cards or mobile wallets.

The criminals then may make small withdrawals to avoid being noticed right away…
