Tacoma plans expansion of traffic cameras to enhance road safety by 2035 Vision Zero goal

TACOMA, Wash. — The city of Tacoma is working to add more traffic cameras to its dangerous roads to catch speeders as part of the city’s Vision Zero goal of having no traffic deaths or serious injuries by the year 2035.

Matt Perrine drives East Bay Street daily for his commute. He knows where an enforcement camera will catch speeders, and he believes it’s working.

“The speeding used to be pretty bad. There were quite a few accidents in the beginning, but not so much anymore,” he explained. “Once you get past the light, then everybody speeds back up.”

The most recent available data shows the city’s sole speed camera on a main thoroughfare generated more than $1.7 million annually since 2019, and more than $2 million in 2024…
