Spokane’s Historic Preservation Façade Improvement Grants seek to turn rubble into rehab

While it’s generally accepted that historic preservation is a worthy goal, the steep costs of revitalization and rehabilitation projects can often make it difficult for owners of historic properties to translate aspirations into action.

In an effort to lower some of those financial hurdles, back in 2018, the Spokane City Council changed the municipal code.

The new ordinance established an incentive fund that would collect the demolition permit fees for any building, historic or not, slated to be torn down within the city limits. The resulting pot of money was to be administered by the Spokane Historic Preservation Office…
