You see it every day. You’ve probably walked around it 100 times. But there are tons of interesting things about the Lafayette Reservoir you probably didn’t know.
1) It was built as an emergency backup water supply (and it can be “off duty” for drinking water)
The reservoir was completed in 1933 as a standby supply for East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) customers, not a primary everyday source. It can be protected as an emergency drinking supply even when it is not actively being used for drinking water. (Wikipedia)
