Copper thieves caught near LAX with $16K in stolen power wire, one arrested

A suspected copper thief was arrested near the Los Angeles International Airport after police caught him and another suspect actively stealing wire from a Department of Water and Power facility, authorities said.

It was early Jan. 14 when LAX Police officers spotted two pickup trucks stopped in the roadway with their hazard lights on. As the officers approached, they observed two individuals cutting and removing utility-grade copper wire from DWP infrastructure.

Police attempted to detain both pickup trucks, but were only able to stop one of them. Authorities did not immediately say what happened to the second vehicle…
