SAN DIEGO — The California Department of Public Health is urging people to get flu vaccinations amid a rise in cases statewide and the detection of a new strain called H3N2 subclade K.

The alert comes as San Diego has experienced a steady rise in flu cases since late June, with 5,200 cases reported. Health officials warn that environmental factors and winter conditions are contributing to the virus’s spread, and experts believe the region has not yet reached peak flu season.
