An extended stretch of cold air starting this weekend is just what ice anglers have been hoping for.
JJ Malvitz of JJ’s Guide Service flew over the bay Monday. He reported multiple large pockets of open water, and not just in shipping lanes. Trophy Ice Fish, Ice Fish Green Bay and Why Knot Charters are among the guide services utilizing airboats to safely cross open water or thin ice. Many other anglers are staying in harbors, bays and shoreline areas to avoid the spots impacted by ice-breaking or strong winds.
Fewer boats are expected at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding this winter, but ice-breaking for remaining vessels or ships that need to get to Green Bay or Marinette could continue another two weeks. Since snow can hide dangerously thin areas, anglers are advised to avoid all ship traffic areas…
