Former news anchor found incompetent to stand trial in mother’s death

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Proceedings have been suspended in the case of a former news anchor charged in the death of her 80-year-old mother after a doctor determined she is unable to stand trial due to her schizophrenia diagnosis.

Angelynn Mock is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her mother, 80-year-old Anita Avers. A doctor evaluated Mock and determined that due to her schizophrenia diagnosis, she is unfit to stand trial.

Halloween incident

Police said they arrived in the area of East Crowley on Halloween 2025 to find Mock in the middle of the street covered in blood. Inside a home, officers found Avers in her bed with several stab wounds.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Mock’s stepfather told police that Mock had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which was later revised to a schizoaffective disorder.
