Fire danger and wind gusts on the rise

Temperature-wise, we have a nice day ahead but we will have to get through freezing temperatures this morning first.

While we enjoy a brief warm-up please be mindful that the threat of grassfires will begin to rise today. Fire Weather Alerts to the northwest will go into effect later this morning.

Winds will be strongest to the northwest today but gusts will be even stronger by Friday. Much of Western Kansas is under a High Wind Watch that will be in effect through Friday. Gusts could get up to 60 to 65 mph. Counties that are not under any High Wind Alerts will still experience a windy day and fire concerns will be elevated.

In addition to the wind, the temperature pendulum will also swing in a colder direction tomorrow. Be sure to bundle up for a blustery Friday.

Skies will be dry today but another cold front that is on the way could soon spark a little bit of wet and wintry weather.

There is a small chance for a sprinkle or shower tonight with the arrival of the cold front. Any moisture will mainly be in the form of rain but could mix with a few snowflakes to the northwest. Movement will be north to south.

As colder air keeps getting pumped into the area through Friday, spotty rain/snow showers could impact portions of Central Kansas.

Outside of a spotty snow shower Friday night, not much moisture is expected after that.
