(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said an old scam is getting an update and targeting people looking for tech support.
According to CSPD, if someone encounters an error message on their computer, i.e., low disk space, their first thought might be to Google a solution. When the victim Googles “How to clear up disk space,” they will see a series of websites, with paid promotions at the top. Clicking one of the top results could take you to a webpage that looks like a legitimate ChatGPT webpage.
However, CSPD said it is actually a saved conversation that appears to provide step-by-step instructions on how to solve the computer issue. Everything looks normal and trustworthy, and you follow the instructions with no issue, until you reach a step that tells you to copy and paste a string of code into your command prompt…
