Serving more than chicken: the story behind Ann Arbor’s new Chick-fil-A

The newest addition to Washtenaw Road, just 5 minutes from Huron, is already hit with students. The convenience, exclusivity, and personal aspects foster major buzz surrounding the nationwide sensation of Chick-fil-A, especially in a town that has long been secluded from the famous chain. Thanks to local owner Joyce Mueller’s constant advocacy for a franchise location in Ann Arbor, the iconic sauce is just down the road.

“I’ve been waiting for Chick-fil-A to come here for a long time,” Mueller said. ”I’ve lived here (in Ann Arbor) for 25 years, and I absolutely love everything about it. My daughter was in a video production class at her high school, and she and I went around Ann Arbor making a video about all of the different landmarks, trying to show the Chick-fil-a team that this was the right city.”However, the meals aren’t the only thing being provided to Huron students. The company’s owner, Truett Cathy, who was unable to receive a formal education, places a major focus on educational opportunities for members of the Chick-fil-A team.

“Education is one of their (the company’s) pillars. Education, world hunger, and economic mobility are the pillars of Chick-fil-A,” Mueller said. “Any of their corporate giving goes to those buckets, nothing else.”

Mueller spoke from her own experience working at a Chick-fil-A throughout her high school and college years, seeing the company’s philanthropy firsthand and being able to use her previous involvement to shape the environment of Ann Arbor’s location…
